A new study suggests that students are not only willing to interact with their teachers online in social media spaces, but are motivated by these interactions.
The study, which compiled previous research from the last decade, looked at student-teacher interactions on social media, and showed that students had little resistance to using these spaces to interact with teachers. Teachers who did use social media with their students found that it helped in dealing with class organization and logistics, and allowed them to give extra support to students who needed it – both emotionally and academically.
Researchers also found that social media, when used in a professional and appropriate manner, improved student-teacher relationships, increased academic motivation and performance, and positively impacted student resilience, empowerment, and commitment.
